Parents generally have a good number of options when it comes to finding nearby child care providers. In fact, there may be several cheerfully decorated preschools and child care facilities within a few blocks of your home. However, you can't judge the quality of a daycare facility based just on its outward appearance. You can talk to other parents to learn what their recommendations are, but your personal preferences and priorities might be at opposite spectrums. The following essential factors should be considered first prior to enrolling your child at any child care facility.

Enrollment Fees, Tuition and Extra Costs

Choosing a daycare provider that you can afford is about more than staying within your budget. Once you find a provider that you and your child both like and appreciate, you don't want to have to pull your child out because you aren't able to keep up with the tuition costs. Additionally, there are usually enrollment fees that are associated with placing your child at a new child care facility. Be prepared to pay for snacks or pack food for your child to eat as meals may not be inclusive.

Rules and Disciplinary Policies

Upon enrollment, good child care facilities lay out the rules of conduct for children that are in attendance as well as their parents or guardians. In other words, you will need to agree to the policies and disciplinary rules that the child care provider sets forth. Even if your child has always been very well behaved and you don't believe that your child would ever act in an unsavory manner, you have to be in agreement with the disciplinary code that your child's daycare facility follows.

Meals and Nutrition

If you won't be providing all of your child's food, find out what's on the menu at the daycare facility. There should be a monthly menu printed up and distributed to parents in advance so that you can make special requests or adjustments based on your child's dietary needs and tastes. Being presented with a monthly menu will also help you to know that your child is eating a balanced diet when not in your physical care.

Structured Activities

If you see plenty of books, building blocks and age appropriate toys you can feel better knowing that you child will have time to play and have fun, but there should also be structured activities. Many child care facilities have playground on-site where children can play out doors on a daily basis. Find out if there will field trips, special guests and other events planned out so that there is a new adventure just waiting for your child to explore at the child care facility of your choosing.
